According to the Institute's statute, the main linguistic objectives include the research of geographical names, the standardization and planning of toponymes, the cooperation with other state agencies in the planning of toponyms, the study of local languages and the regulation of their public use, and the publication of related texts. The linguistic activities of the Võro Institute have two main directions:
